Sit by the fountain in Zócalo and enjoy the view of cruise ships in the bay as the locals go about their days around you. Stop for lunch in one of the restaurants skirting the square or take a walk around the winding backstreets to get a feel for this old-style port. Admire the Spanish colonial architecture in the plaza and take a walk down the nearby Avenida México to do some shopping.
Zócalo, also known as Jardín Álvaro Obregon, is Manzanillo’s main town square. It dates back to the 19th century and has been the hub of local activity in the town ever since. The Spanish built many of the impressive houses you see around the plaza, lending it a colonial and stately air.
Stroll through the tree-lined square and find a bench or quiet place to sit and relax. The fountain in the middle of the square makes an attractive centerpiece sit nearby if you need to cool down.
Some of Manzanillo’s most popular restaurants are located in Zócalo. Find a restaurant with open-air seating and have lunch of local seafood while watching the activity in the bay.
Explore the backstreets surrounding the square or take a walk down the Avenida Mexico. This is Manzanillo’s main shopping street. You’ll find a wide range of chain stores and boutiques so you can shop for luxury items or souvenirs.
Come back to Zócalo in the evening when the square is pleasantly cool and the bustle of the day has quieted to enjoy a romantic stroll or another meal.
Zócalo is located in central Manzanillo, a short taxi ride from the main beaches and sights. You’ll almost certainly pass through it on your visit to the town, but it’s well worth taking an hour or so to stroll around and explore the Centro Historico area.
