Hakuna Majiwe is a safe, clean, and well-maintained location, offering a pleasant living environment. It is advisable to prepare a well-structured budget, as there may be unexpected costs, such as the Zanzibar government tourism taxes. While prices are somewhat higher than average, which is typical for similar destinations, the quality of services provided is excellent and meets expectations.

Should have been great, but wasn’t

Posted 29 May 2024 on Hotels
The staff were very friendly and tried their best. However, a recent storm (two weeks before) had devastated half of the hotel, destroying the kitchen and dining area and removing several roofs. When we arrived, the hotel looked like a bombsite with debris everywhere which was quite unsafe. A basic breakfast was offered in an empty bedroom in a make-shift kitchen. We were awaken every morning with the sound of hammering and construction in the next rooms. The rooms had functioning ACS, but the windows had no glass only mosquito nets to it was difficult to sleep. Essentially, great location, friendly staff, but hotel should not be open until the major repairs had been conducted.

Not value for money

Posted 7 Nov 2023 on Hotels
We stayed here for 7 nights and paid £1102 for this, which was not good value for money. The staff are all incredibly friendly and amenable. However, the bungalows are tired and run-down, the door handle was nearly coming off to our room, the taps are severely lime-scaled and wall switches with holes in them? We had to ask for hand soap, toilet roll and we had to keep asking for a towel. The towels and bedding were stained. There is no mattress protector. The breakfast was awful; stale cereal and bread, the only meat was a processed hot dog and the coffee was instant powdered, which is a huge shame because Tanzania produces coffee. There was a pod machine for the coffee, but this was an additional $3. We decided not to eat there for any other meal. The location is ok, you have to walk at least 15 to 20 minutes to get to another restaurant or bar, but it felt safe to do so along the beach. While the beach is beautiful in Paje, the beach here was very sea-weedy, so you cannot enter the water here. It was definitely not value for money and was disappointed when I contacted hotels.com for help on arranging another hotel and they advised it was non-refundable.

Book elsewhere

Posted 18 Oct 2022 on Hotels
This is a tired somewhat rundown resort. It seems apparent to us that the manager is not willing to put any money into maintenance or any updates on this property. The food choices for breakfast were on such a shoestring budget it was almost insulting. Literally no cheese or dairy and the only meat were hot dog wieners. There was a sign on the Buffay one morning advertising chicken samosas but when I asked about them the server said “no… We didn’t make them“. The dartboard didn’t have any darts and the foosball table was so unbalanced you couldn’t play on it. All the cushions were dirty and worn out on all of the patio furniture and the towels were so rough they almost scratched your skin rather than drying it. The location feels somewhat isolated compared to other parts of the beach of Pagé. I highly recommend staying somewhere else closer to some action where you can watch kite surfers and multiple restaurants and bars are around. Lastly the bar at this resort was a joke. The wine was terrible the beer offerings sparse and the fridge was not cold enough to chill any of the beverages. The only saving grace was the second unit we stayed in had an ocean view and a nice outside swing. The first bungalow we were put in was pretty awful. The toilet was cracked, the bathroom dirty and twice we had to call staff to exterminate ants which were crawling all over the walls. Look elsewhere is my suggestion.

Beautiful property with bar, great wifi, pool, beach and many chairs, little book exchange, and volleyball and soccer balls. Rooms are large, include bug net and front porch with day bed. Wonderful staff who are very friendly and helpful!
