Zagreb Zoo is a veritable animal kingdom located in Maksimir Park, which is more than 200 years old. Bring the kids along and spend several hours wandering around the enclosures, where you can observe numerous interesting species, ranging from big cats and monkeys to reptiles and birds.
The zoo covers an area of about 7 acres (17 hectares) and encompasses a lake and enclosures for various mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and invertebrates from all across the globe. Head to the aquatic exhibits to see otters and sea lions gliding around. To witness them at their most active, arrange your visit to coincide with the feeding time when they’re extra excitable in anticipation of a meal.
Visit the monkey habitats to hear South American howler monkeys giving their characteristic roars or the tapir enclosure to see the curious creatures watching spectators. Other animals that can be seen in this zoo include lions, leopards and jaguars.
Enroll in the Abracadabra Zoo night walks in October to see nocturnal inhabitants come to life. Follow a leader on a walk through the dark zoo pathways, with only flashlights to guide the way. Along the walk, you’ll learn about the animals that are active at night as well as hear traditional stories and legends from costumed docents.
The zoo also hosts an interesting program of educational events including hands-on workshops and practical experiments. Those genuinely interested in animal care can sign up to be trainers for a day for a fee. This experience offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the life of a professional handler.
Zagreb Zoo is located at the southern end of Maksimir Park about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from the main train station. The zoo has an entrance fee. It is open daily, but hours vary depending on the season. Save your visit for good weather as many of the enclosures are outdoors. That way, you can combine the trip with a stroll around the gorgeous forested Maksimir Park.
