Visit one of the region’s finest examples of Churrigueresque architecture and admire the ornate Baroque flourishes, neoclassical interiors and gilded altar.

The Zacatecas Cathedral is an awe-inspiring symbol of the city’s historic prosperity, rising high above the city’s skyline with its central dome and flanking towers. Also known as Catedral Basílica de la Asunción de María de Zacatecas, the cathedral was built between 1730 and 1760 and has long been an emblem of the city. Experience the building’s serene atmosphere as you peruse historic artworks and splendid decorations. Spend some time in quiet reflection amid the grandeur of this beautiful building that is part of UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic center of Zacatecas.

Wander around the Plaza de Armas and appreciate the cathedral’s ornate architecture. The Churrigueresque design of the pink-hued cantera stone gives the cathedral its distinctive appearance. Churrigueresque is a late Spanish Baroque style characterized by elaborate decoration. Look up at the cathedral’s ornately detailed main façade, which features carved lacework and Corinthian columns. See the carvings of four apostles, as well as motifs of plants and angels. Two towers flank the main façade and are topped with richly decorated columns.

Make your way into the cathedral to explore its contrastingly austere interior. See tall Doric columns and neoclassical side altars as you continue toward the high altar. Designed by Javier Marín, the gilded altar is 17 feet (5.2 meters) tall and features geometric niches that support 11 delicate sculptures. At the top, you’ll see the Virgin of the Assumption. At the main shrine you’ll see the sculpture of Our Lady of Zacatecas.

Zacatecas Cathedral is the perfect place to experience some of the city’s fascinating history mingled with the flurry of daily life. Be sure to save some time to relax in the Plaza de Armas, watching the hues of the setting sun change the coral-pink shades of cantera stone. Locals say the best time to view the building’s gorgeous masonry is in the late afternoon or at night, when city lights dramatically illuminate the façade.

Zacatecas Cathedral is situated in the heart of the city’s historic downtown area, which is easy to explore on foot. Experience a rich showcase of architecture in this historically prosperous city and add Zacatecas Cathedral to your walking tour. The cathedral is open daily for free.
