Get close to plants and animals from Africa, Asia and Mexico on boat, toy train and walking tours at this well-maintained safari park.

Yumká is a wildlife and safari park that strives to promote the education and protection of the ecosystems of Tabasco state. Spot numerous exotic species while exploring an aviary, jungle, lagoon and savanna distributed across 250 acres (101 hectares). Yumká takes its name from a Mayan word that means an elf that looks after the jungle and animals. The Chontales people, a Mayan group from Tabasco, believe in the presence of a sacred spirit that takes care of the local natural environment.

A tour of the park incorporates a combination of a boat trip, train ride and walking safari. Traverse the verdant jungle habitat on foot via a series of paths and bridges. Howler monkeys, iguanas and raccoons roam freely. Admire the majestic beauty of big cats, including jaguars, pumas and tigers. Discover a riot of aroma and color in the botanical garden and vivarium.

Step aboard the toy train for a journey around the vast savanna area. Observe as antelopes, elephants, giraffes, rhinoceroses and zebras live together harmoniously. Multicolored birds, such as cockatoos, macaws and toucans, fill the aviary. Pose for a photo with a snake around your neck in the reptile room.

Cruise across the placid lagoon on a motorboat. Among its inhabitants are crocodiles, manatees and hippos. A small section of the lagoon is accessible via a bridge in the jungle zone. Go to the manatee reserve to learn about the lives of these aquatic, herbivorous mammals and the measures being taken to save them from extinction.

The park is located 12 miles (20 kilometers) east of Villahermosa. The most convenient way to get here is by taxi or rented car. If you drive, use the free parking available at the park’s entrance.

Yumká is open daily and has an admission fee. Most guides speak Spanish only, although some may be able to provide information in English. Wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat to protect you from the hot sun.
