You could spend most of the day relaxing and exploring the sights of Yeuxiu Park (Yuexiu Gongyuan). This vast green space covers an area of 86 hectares (213 acres) and encompasses seven hills and three manmade lakes along with a number of monuments, cultural sights and museums.
Embark on a sightseeing trip through the park’s extensive grounds, traipsing along paved trails, inside gardens, up hills and around by the edge of the water.
Stop by the Five Rams stone sculpture, a popular landmark widely regarded as an emblem for the city. Visit the five-storey Zhenhai Tower, which was built in 1380 as watchtower in the early days of the Ming Dynasty. Today, it’s a museum housing relics from 2,000 years of Guangzhou’s history.
Learn about Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the first president of the Republic of China, which lasted from 1912 to 1949, at the memorial hall built in his honour. The hall is situated on the site of his Presidential Office, from the years before China was ruled by the Communist Party. Inside the building are photographs and documents detailing his life and work. There is a fee for admission. Walk around the grounds of the memorial complex to see its great ceiba tree at more than 300 years old, it is said to be the oldest in Guangzhou.
While you are in this part of the park go behind the memorial hall to see the 200-metre (656-foot) segment of ancient wall. This old city wall is more than 600 years old and has been well preserved.
If you want to get active, make use of the free exercise equipment that has been installed in the park. Rent a paddle boat and enjoy some serene moments on the still waters of Beixiu Lake. The park’s other facilities include a swimming pool, restaurants and a stadium.
Yuexiu Park is situated in central Guangzhou and its five entrances are serviced by numerous bus routes. Yeuxiu Park Station on Subway Line 2 is close to the main entrance. The park is open daily.
