White Plains, in New York’s Hudson Valley, is often overshadowed by nearby New York City. Yet it has several upscale malls and restaurants that make it an entertaining place to spend a day.
City Center is a large complex that frequently hosts complimentary movies, concerts and other performances. During warmer months, get fresh locally produced food at the nearby farmers market.
White Plains is probably best known for its malls, most notably the Westchester. This complex has anchor stores of Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom and features some of the world’s most luxurious labels as well as a selection of more affordable shops. For a more typical mall experience, head to The Galleria at White Plains or The Source at White Plains. These indoor centers offer a wide variety of stores to meet all your shopping needs.
The city oversees dozens of parks, playgrounds and gardens ranging from park squares to relatively secluded hiking trails. Saxon Woods Park is a popular outdoor destination. The 700-acre (282-hectare) site offers numerous recreational activities. Golfers of all skills can enjoy a day on the greens at the park’s 18-hole or miniature golf courses. Children flock to the aquatic playground and swimming pool. Hiking trails lead you away from the highly trafficked portion of the park and into its peaceful woodlands.
Throughout the year, White Plains holds several seasonal events and festivals. If you are in town, the New Year’s celebration and the St. Patrick’s Day parade shouldn’t be missed. In winter, dress warmly and head to Ebersole Ice Rink in Delfino Park. The rink is beloved by figure skaters, hockey players and even those putting on their skates for the very first time.
New York City is just 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of White Plains. With no traffic, you can reach it in under 30 minutes by car. For a more stress-free journey, take an express train from Metro North Station, which reliably delivers you into the Big Apple in 35 minutes.
