As you walk through the grounds of the University of Minnesota it is impossible not to notice the stunning architecture of Weisman Art Museum (WAM) building. Designed by the world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the WAM is one of his most famous modernist buildings in the United States. He also counts the exceptional Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain among his award-winning accomplishments. Originally opened in 1934, it wasn't until 1993 with thanks to Gehry's redesign that the Weisman Art Museum became one of the architectural jewels in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul region.
Located on the grounds of the University of Minnesota, the Weisman Art Museum is home to over 17,000 works. From historic art and ancient ceramics to contemporary pieces and traditional furniture, there is something to pique everybody’s interest.
Over in the American Modernism wing you will find works by Georgia O'Keefe and pop artists Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol to name but a few. Make sure to check out the Native-American pottery which include ceramic pieces dating back as far as 350 B.C. Learn the strange story of the Mimbres tribe, now extinct, who disappeared from the Arizona desert circa 1150 leaving only drawings of gambling, dancing and religion behind them.
Some beautiful examples of ancient Korean furniture are on show, detailing the exquisite craftsmanship of the Choson dynasty. Travelling exhibitions are frequently held here so make sure to check the museums official website for details.
If you visit at the weekend be sure to avail of the free guided tours. There are parking facilities for a fee or if you're feeling energetic, the University of Minnesota campus operates the Nice Ride MN bike share scheme. The museum is open Tuesday through to Sunday.
