At just fifteen minutes on foot from the city centre, Walter Fletcher Beach is the ideal place for a quick swim or lunch with friends. However, this well-appointed beach has plenty of attractions to keep the family happy for a whole day. Popular with locals and visitors alike, an early start is the best way to bag a prime spot, especially at holiday times. The calm water along this stretch of coast provides perfect conditions for swimming, while the coral outcrops bring a rich variety of sea creatures within close range of shore. Rent diving or snorkelling gear from one of the beachside shops to see lionfish and turtles, as well as colourful tropical fish. If you’ve got youngsters in tow, let them loose in the Aquasol Theme Park, which offers loads of energy-busting activities such as go-karts, jet-skis and tennis. While the kids are occupied, take a walk over the road to explore the Old Fort, originally used by the British to defend Montego Bay from invasion by sea. You can still see a few of the old cannons that give a clue to its military past, but most people come here nowadays for its famous craft market, which spills over into Fort Street. Local artisans set out colourful stalls offering a tempting variety of clothes, accessories, jewellery and ornaments, which make great presents to take home to friends or treat yourself to a lasting memento of your holiday.Walter Fletcher Beach is open every day and there is a small admission charge. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards, offering extra peace of mind for families. There are plenty of vendors on the beach offering snacks and drinks, as well as picnic tables in the shade where you can enjoy your own food. Alternatively, head to nearby Gloucester Avenue where you’ll find a good choice of restaurants specialising in delicious Jamaican cuisine.
