Walk along the tops of these iconic walls that surround the city. Gaze up at the impressive gates and landmarks.

Wrapping their way around the churches and museums of the historic center, the 11th-century Walls of Ávila are the city’s defining structure and draw visitors from across the world. Although constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries, these city ramparts remain nearly complete and merge with certain historic landmarks. Make your way around this famous city perimeter for a glimpse into the old town’s history.

See the exceptional sight of the walls at night, when they are bathed in golden light. Amble along the outside of the walls and lay down a blanket for a picnic on a grassy knoll. The turrets are up to 50 feet (15 meters) tall.

Walk through some of the nine gates, such as the majestic Puerta de San Vicente and Puerta del Alcázar. These gates are flanked by tall towers and semicircular arches. Visit the spectacular Ávila Cathedral its apse merges with the walls.

Note that it is possible to walk along about half of the ramparts along the perimeter. Gain access through the tourism office and stroll along the walls. Enjoy the views and capture photos of your favorite landmarks from this vantage point. Make your way to Los Cuatro Postes monument in the western outskirts of the city for a panoramic look back at the walls and the historic center.

Dine at some of the tapas bars and restaurants that adorn the cobbled alleys running parallel to the walls. Watch people go by from the comfort of one of the tables set up on the many plazas in the historic center.

You can walk on the walls from morning to evening on most days. Check the website for specific times of closure.

The Walls of Ávila surround the historic center of the city in a shape close to a rectangle. The walls cover an area of 76 acres (31 hectares) and contain many of the city’s most fascinating landmarks. See the Polentinos Palace, the Santa Teresa de Jesús Convent and the Ávila Cathedral.
