Vianden Castle

Perched on a hill overlooking Vianden, this imposing fortress is considered to be among Luxembourg’s finest historical residences.

Vianden Castle is the most famous attraction in Vianden. It dominates the town’s skyline with its commanding battlements and spires. Explore the castle’s recreated rooms, learn more about its history at the on-site museum and enjoy the spectacular views visible from the windows.

The current castle was built between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of an earlier Roman castle. It served as the residence of the wealthy Counts of Vianden for centuries, before falling into ruin in the 1800s. In the 20th century, the castle was given to the state to be meticulously restored. Check out the models and drawings in the museum and view excavated walls which reflect different periods of its history.

Follow the uphill trail that leads from Vianden toward the castle. Although the ascent is steep, the vistas along the way make it a rewarding climb. Alternatively, ride the chairlift and enjoy the views of the town and river below as you’re shuttled up the hill.

Be sure to see the museum on the castle’s first floor, where you’ll find ancient armor and archeological artifacts. On the upper levels, look for exhibits dedicated to the castle’s preservation over the years, as well as exhibits that trace the genealogy of the Vianden family.

Don’t miss the rooms that recreate the décor of the castle as it would have appeared when it was home to the Counts of Vianden. You’ll find a massive 15th-century fireplace in the banqueting hall and rich red curtains covering the six windows of the master bedroom.

Stop by the Arend Room to see photos of the castle’s celebrity visitors, including John Malkovich and Mikhail Gorbachev. Save time to see the unusual chapel, which consists of two floors connected by a central pit.

Vianden Castle is located in northeastern Luxembourg and can be reached by train or bus from Luxembourg City. Opening hours vary by season and there is an admission fee.
