Plan some time away from the city in this peaceful and verdant park, located in the upscale neighborhood of Van Vorst. Follow paths through the 2-acre (1-hectare) square and admire the attractive landscaping, which features flowerbeds, trees and well-kept grassy lawns.
Walk around the perimeter of the park to see some of Jersey City’s finest brownstones. These Victorian residences were built in the late 19th century and are now much sought-after properties.
The park itself centers on a small and attractive gazebo. Explore the park by following the paths leading past several water fountains. If you have kids with you, head for the park’s playground where they can swing, slide and play for hours. If you have dogs, bring them too so they can bound around the park’s dog run.
Pack a picnic to enjoy on the park’s lawns. Lie down and soak up the low-key neighborhood vibe. Even on weekend days when many local families come to enjoy the park, it maintains a laid-back atmosphere. Visit during the week at lunchtime and encounter many local workers eating their lunch in the pleasant and quiet surroundings.
The park hosts a number of community events during warmer months. Come here on a Saturday to look around the farmers market, which occurs weekly from late April to late December. Arrive early and browse stalls stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables from the region as well as prepared foods, baked goods and skincare products.
During summer months, the park is also the setting for regular open-air film screenings. Check online to see what films will be shown during your visit. Note that screenings are weather dependent. The Hudson Shakespeare Company also presents live Shakespeare performances in the park as part of its summer touring season.
