Shonky, agressive new owner (now Zo Hostel) dirty

Posted 26 Nov 2015 on Hotels
Shonky and aggressive new owner, this hostel now belongs to the Zo Group. The new owner would not honour our reservation with Hotels.com and was extremely rude and aggressive. He showed us 2 rooms both which were very crampled, dirty and nothing like the photos of the Zostel. I would avoid this place and if you have made a booking for Zostel, be advised that they are not honouring them. The Haveli Poonam up the road and at a much better location is a much better place with lovely people and a lovely terrace.

Lake views at reasonable rates

Posted 1 Nov 2014
Pros: Lake views (though mostly obstructed on the lower floors).
Cons: Hire someone with a trained eye to manage the place. Train the staff to make it not only minimally clean but also beautiful. Get flowers. Fix Wifi.
We arrived at Zostel late at night but they had kept our room for us. Staff were agreeable. We chose a private room and found it adequate. Its one distinguishing feature was that there were views of the lake (albeit through the branches of a great tree). It's bare-bones simple hostel-style accommodation. There were no towels and only single sheets on the bed (not top and bottom sheets), but they gave us towels on request. Hot water was working. The WiFi is free but was not functioning during our visit (the network was on but we could not load web pages or email). There's a simple rooftop restaurant with nice views of the lake. Our overall impression was that Zostel is a great idea that would benefit if more attention were paid by the owners, as the staff are sweet and agreeable but they weren't putting in any effort to make the place nice. A regular investment of a little more love and care in the place would go a long way toward making it great instead of merely serviceable.

Great hostel

Posted 25 Oct 2014 on Hotels
Hostels are fairly new to India, so Zostel is doing a great thing by growing their availability. Everything is very well kept, the rooms are clean and comfortable, the bathrooms could have been a bit cleaner but they're no worse than other good hostels I've stayed in. The location is good, can be a bit hard to find but it's right in the old city but a bit off the main roads which offers a lot of peace compared to other places to stay. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooftop restaurant is great, serves good food (I ate there quite a bit in the few days I stayed) and offers incredible views of the lake/palaces/etc. Wifi was generally accessible and signal was good. There's generally a good ambiance -- opportunities to socialize, and also spaces to get some work done. If I had one suggestion for the hostel, it would be to think about making the entryway a bit more of a focal point as a hang-out spot -- one of the main reasons I stay in hostels is to meet folks and socialize, so I appreciate when the spaces are set up properly for this to happen, and I heard others also feeling like there were other guesthouses in Udaipur which offered more in this respect. Still, I made several new friends in the hostel, a few of whom I hung out with in other cities, so all good. Overall a great experience.

Best Location

The location of Zostel is the biggest advantage, Many of the tourist destinations are within walking distance. They even have rooms with bunk beds, would be worth trying.
