A bustling and cultured city nestled in the green foothills of the Aconquija Mountains where you will find magnificent architecture and fascinating archaeological ruins.

Stay in San Miguel de Tucumán, also known as simply Tucumán, to explore this scenic subtropical region of Argentina. Try some delicious local specialties, visit the museums and cathedrals and venture into the spectacular natural surroundings.

Stroll through the historic center to see the beautiful cathedrals of Basilica de Merced andIglesia San Francisco.Admire the impressive Tucamán Government House that is reminiscent of Buenos Aires grandest stone buildings.

Rest with the locals on a bench in the shady Plaza Independencia and enjoy the classical statues and tinkling fountain. Taste an empanada at one of the nearby restaurants famous for producing the Tucumán version of these pastries filled with meat, cheese and vegetables.

Learn about the incredible history of the city at Casa Historica de Tucumán. This important building is where Argentina’s Declaration of Independence from Spain was signed in 1816. Ask for an English-speaking guide when you purchase your tickets as the exhibit signs are in Spanish.

Visit the famous Ruins of Quilmes a 3.5-hour drive northwest of the regional capital. These ruins are from what is said to have been one of the largest pre-Hispanic settlements in Argentina. Walk among the geometrical building formations that date from approximately A.D 850 and learn about the long Diaguita resistance to the Spanish army that took place here.

Explore the winding paths of the lush Parque Sierra de San Javier. Hike the forested trails through this pretty nature reserve or enjoy the view over the city at the foot of the giant statue of Christ that stands on the mountainside.

Ride a horse through mysterious cloud forests then up into the foothills of the Aconquija Mountains on an adventure that begins in the lush valley of Raco. Find a tour including the transfer to the valley, located 32 miles (52 kilometers) from the regional capital.

Fly to the domestic airport in San Miguel de Tucamán from Buenos Aires or take an overnight bus on a journey of approximately 800 miles (1,300 kilometers).

Let the wonders of this appealing city entertain you while you journey into some of the region’s breathtaking natural areas.
