One of the world’s northernmost churches has presided over the waters of Vågsfjord and housed treasured religious artworks since medieval times.

Trondenes Church (Trondenes Kirke) is a pretty parish church overlooking the still waters around the Trondenes Peninsula. Admire the distinctive medieval architecture of this simple white church topped with a steeply pitched red roof. Join a tour and explore the church’s interior to see its richly decorated Gothic and Baroque ornamentations. It is believed the current structure dates back to between 1250 and 1400, but the site has had religious significance since the 11th century.

Enjoy the finest view of the waterfront church with a boat trip around the fjord. The building is set breathtakingly against rugged mountain peaks. Approach Trondenes Church from the scenic country road to see it amid gentle green hillsides or blankets of thick snow, depending on the season. The structure’s architecture has defensive elements against the threat of raids, including narrow windows and thick walls. Defensive towers and thick courtyard walls built in the 1100s are partially visible east of the church.

Enter the tall arched doors and explore the church’s large nave and chancel. Note its beautifully decorated altar and Baroque pulpit. Three Gothic triptychs from German artist Bernt Notke are lit by the multicolored tones of the stained-glass windows, as well as remnants of medieval frescoes in the choir area. Check out the organ, which dates back the 18th century. In the churchyard, you’ll find a tranquil cemetery and stunning views of Vågsfjord and the surrounding islands.

Attend a Mass during one of the church’s services. Join a guided tour to get an insight into the church’s fascinating history and religious significance. Tours operate regularly throughout the summer. Book a tour in advance during the rest of the year.

Trondenes Church is located on the eastern waterfront of the Trondenes Peninsula, 2 miles (3 kilometers) north of the town of Harstad. Reach Trondenes Church on foot, by car or by boat. Make sure the church is on your planned tour of the historic area. Nearby, find the Trondenes Historical Centre. This interactive museum houses an auditorium and a collection of multimedia exhibits.
