The medium sized town of Trollhattan is located in Vastergotland, around 70 kilometres from Sweden's second city Gothenburg. There are lots to see and much to do in Trollhattan and its immediate vicinity.
The river Gota Alv runs straight through Trollhattan, and it is a town shaped by water. During the summer you can see the dams open at the waterfall Trollhattefallen, and the sight and sound of the raging water is something you will not easily forget. Other exciting experiences around the waterfall and lock area of Trollhattan is the cable car up to Energihuset Insikten where you can go on a guided tour of Olidans Power Station. Go for a walk along the canal Trollhatte Kanal, or join a cruise with M/S Elfkungen which takes you through a few locks on the journey across the water.
Part of the Linnéleden, a bike trail that follows the footsteps of Carl Linneaus, goes through Trollhattan. You can follow it to the lookout point Kopparklinten, to Hullsjon Nature Reserve and to the museum Kungajaktmuseet Algens Berg. The latter is situated on Hunneberg, a scenic mountain area peppered with hiking paths. You can also choose to follow the fourteen kilometre Edvidsleden, which has several starting points that allow you to choose the length of your hike. Take a shorter walk for instance in Akerstroms Nature Reserve or stick only to the part that follows Gota Alv.
Take a more urban walk along Trollhattan Walk of Fame – the stars in the road Storgatan show which famous Swedish and international actors have been here. One of the more famous ones is Nicole Kidman who came here to shoot with Danish director Lars von Trier. Trollhattan has a film studio and several popular film locations, and is sometimes called Trollywood.
Trollhattan is also closely associated with the car manufacturer Saab. At the Saab Museum nostalgics and car buffs can study classic car models and buy toys and novelty cars from the gift shop. Next to the museum you find Innovatums Science Center where old and young can experiment at different stations and learn about physics, technology and the environment in a fun and hands-on way.
Travel to Trollhattan via Gothenburg, from where you can get the train or the bus. The closest international airport to Trollhattan is Gothenburg Landvetter. The commuter train from Gothenburg station takes just over 30 minutes, and driving you can reach Trollhattan in under an hour.
