Artwork, curious artifacts from Indiana and the former house of an industrialist family are some of the attractions at this downtown museum.

From antique audio equipment to newspaper cuttings dating back to 1830, period furniture and photography archives, The History Museum showcases the cultural heritage of Indiana. Established in 1867, this is one of the state of Indiana’s longest-running historical societies.

First housed in St. Joseph County Courthouse, The History Museum moved to its present-day location in 1994, which is a shared complex with the Oliver Mansion and Studebaker National Museum.

Discover life in the St. Joseph River Valley from prehistoric times via dioramas and hands-on exhibits. Learn about French settlers, hear stories of rural pioneer lifestyles, watch a video celebrating the region’s African American community and see the rise and fall of the Studebaker Motor Company.

A vast collection of archive films, equipment, photos and match programs honors the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Browse a display of over 250 artistic and colorful lamps.

Temporary exhibitions chronicle subjects such as the architectural styles at the University of Notre Dame and decorative arts by Louis Comfort Tiffany. In the Kidsfirst Children’s Museum kids can explore the recreation of a pioneer settlement, listen to educational stories and attend craft workshops.

Join a guided tour of the 38-room Romanesque Queen Anne-style Oliver Mansion. It was once the family home of the Oliver family, who established the Oliver Farm Equipment Company and provided industrial employment to the region. The rooms, fireplaces, furniture and tableware have been expertly preserved to reflect the family’s opulent home life.

Wander around the Italianate garden, home to a rose garden, teahouse and grass tennis court.

Find the museum in the West Washington Historic Neighborhood and a 15-minute walk from downtown South Bend. Free parking is available on-site and on the city streets for limited periods.

The History Museum is open daily. Tours of Oliver House are from Monday to Saturday. Bookings are recommended. The admission fee includes access to the museum and house. A combined ticket grants entrance to the Studebaker National Museum also.
