Tangle Falls

Admire the beauty of this popular and photogenic waterfall, conveniently located next to the Icefields Parkway.

Tangle Falls is known as one of the most picturesque of all of the waterfalls in Jasper National Park. Unlike the more powerful cascades, the water tumbles over a series of steps in the rock, creating a beautiful, multi-tiered effect. This scene is frequently used by professional photographers looking to capture the perfect picture.

Tangle Falls are located so close to the Icefields Parkway that the water spray is frequently blown across the road. Time your visit so that you arrive either early morning or early evening in order to avoid the crowds. Although this is far from being the largest waterfall in Jasper National Park, its unique appearance, combined with its very easy access, ensures that it draws large numbers of visitors.

Water levels at the falls vary considerably according to the season and the temperature, as they are governed by the melting of the glaciers and snow cover. If you visit during the winter months, you may even be lucky enough to catch the stunning view of the waterfall frozen into a dramatic ice sculpture.

Less well known are the Lower Tangle Falls. If you make your way downstream, just 250 metres along the hiking trail, you’ll discover this second stepped waterfall with pristine little rock pools in between the tiers. Although this is still close to the Icefields Parkway, few visitors venture down, and chances are that you’ll have this spot to yourself.

As with all trails close to waterfalls, take care when making your way on foot. The rocks are very steep and can be extremely slippery due to the water mist that settles on them.

Don’t miss the nearby Stutfield Glacier viewpoint, just 1 kilometre further along from Tangle Falls. Two spectacular ice falls have been formed by the glacier pouring over the 900 metre sheer cliff. You’ll be able to take amazing photos from this roadside location.

Tangle Falls is located approximately 95 kilometres south of Jasper, just off the Icefields Parkway.
