Spend some time in a lively city square that is bordered by old colonial buildings that house history, art and puppetry museums.

Stroll, unwind and enjoy rich cultural experiences in Taman Fatahillah. This attractive cobblestone square in the heart of Jakarta's historic center is surrounded by three fascinating museums and is a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike. It is named after Fatahillah, a 16th-century military figure and a national hero.

Walk through the square to familiarize yourself with its lively atmosphere. You may come across buskers and street peddlers selling a variety of goods.

Go over to the Jakarta History Museum, which is housed in the former city hall. This early 18th-century building also once served as a prison, and those who were sentenced to death were executed in the square. Inside are exhibitions and thousands of artifacts covering the history of the area, from prehistoric times to the present day. The collections include centuries-old furniture, ceramics, weapons and maps.

Learn about a traditional form of Indonesian puppetry called Javan wayang at the Wayang Museum. Browse the collections of elaborate wooden puppets, shadow puppets and dolls from Indonesia and neighboring countries such as Thailand and Vietnam. Occasionally, the museum will put on puppet shows.

On the east side of the square, find the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics. Peruse hundreds of paintings, sculptures and ceramic pieces from centuries gone by.

See the fountain in the middle of the square, a replica of the original, which used to supply water to the city.

Round off your visit to the square with refreshments amid the elegant surroundings of Café Batavia, which is housed in one of the oldest buildings in Jakarta. Construction started in 1805 and over the years it has been used as an administration office and art gallery.

Taman Fatahillah is located in Kota Tua, Jakarta's old town and is easy to get to by public transportation. Another option is to arrive and get around the city by bike. They are available to rent on the square.
