Named for its “super tube” waves, this beach is one of Portugal’s premier surfing destinations and hosts international championships with its wild swells.

Experience the supercharged swell of Portugal’s surf beaches at Supertubos Beach (Praia dos Supertubos). Also known as Medão Grande, Supertubos Beach is firmly fixed on the world surfing map. Watch the tubular swell rolling into the shore and check out some of the surfing talent riding the waves. Whether you’re swimming, surfing or spectating, Supertubos Beach is an exciting destination year-round.

Make your way across the sand dunes that flank Supertubos Beach and reach the broad sweep of fine golden sands. If the swell is up, the first thing you will notice is the sound. Listen to the roaring waves as they curl into shore. Sometimes these “super tubes” can reach 9 feet (3 meters) in height. Surfers and bodyboarders flock from all over to experience these wild waves. If you are an experienced surfer, take on the breaks for yourself. If not, sit back on a rented sun lounge and watch the action unfold.

Supertubos Beach is host to some of Portugal’s most important surf sports events, including windsurfing and Jet Skiing. The crowning event is the Supertubos Beach stage of the annual surfing world championship. Held in October each year, this surf contest sees some of the world’s best come head-to-head for the championship title.

There’s plenty more to see than surfing on Supertubos Beach, however. Stroll along the sand dunes and enjoy magnificent ocean views. On the northern side of the beach you’ll find the Praia do Molhe Leste, which presents magnificent views of the mouth of the harbor and Peniche’s rugged cliffs. Swim in the lifeguard-patrolled waves or take advantage of the surf fishing facilities. On the foreshore, there are a range of beach bars, cafés and restaurants. Stay in one of the guesthouses or hostels situated alongside the foreshore to have the beautiful beach on your doorstep.

Supertubos Beach is located on the Casal da Vala, less than 10-minutes’ drive from Peniche’s city center. The beach has disability access, public restrooms and showers.
