Surf the legendary breaks or stroll along the sandy beach bordering the western flank of Knocknarea on the Cúil Irra peninsula.

Strandhill Beach borders the coastal town of Strandhill, a charming spot known for its gorgeous scenery, surf breaks and dunes covered by marram grass. Wander along the sandy beach and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding hillside or take the icy plunge into the surf breaks that roll into the peninsula. Relax in an oceanfront café and sample scones and jam while you watch the roaring sea.

Wander along the shoreline at Strandhill Beach and check out the coastal dunes. These have been protected from erosion in some places by large boulders. Find a network of pretty coastal walks winding through the dunes to Culleenamore Strand and Killaspubrone, presenting fantastic views of Knocknarea, Ben Bulben and Blackrock Lighthouse. Rent beach cruiser bikes from the waterfront and cycle along the packed sand at low tide.

Avid surfers take advantage of the swells that crash against the shoreline, especially during a high tide. Sign up for training at the surfing school located on the beach if you would like to work on your technique or get some tips from an expert. Swimming is not recommended due to the power of the beach’s waves and the dangerous tides. Instead, take a relaxing swim in the VOYA seaweed bath, a spa with luxurious hot seawater spa enriched by the oils of the local seaweed.

Visit the promenade’s cafés and restaurants to relax and enjoy a meal with a view of the beach. Alternatively, pack a picnic and find a spot to stretch out on the sand. Get an ice cream and watch the sunset from the soft golden sands.

Test your swing on the 18-hole Strandhill Golf Course set within the dunes or head to nearby Hamilton Park to watch local soccer and rugby matches.

Strandhill Beach is located about 6 miles (10 kilometers) west of Sligo town. The pretty seaside town is a popular getaway during the warmer months. Ride the local bus that connects Sligo to Strandhill or use the free parking. Stay a few nights at a beachfront hotel or make the short trip from Sligo on a sunny day.
