Stockholm Palace

Stockholm Royal Palace featuring a square or plaza

Explore banquet halls and reception rooms, find 18th-century art and watch the changing of the guard at the official residence of Sweden’s royal family.

Stockholm Royal Palace (Stockholms Slott) is a Baroque-style palace located in Stockholm’s Old Town. Built in the 1700s, today it’s an official residence of the Swedish royal family. Visit the seven-floor palace to explore some of the 600 rooms, find a collection of Italian sculptures and watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony.

Start your visit in the palace’s Royal Apartments. In the Cabinet Room you’ll observe the meeting area for the king and government. Go to the Hall of State to see the silver throne of Queen Kristina, who ruled for 21 years in the 1600s before changing religion and abdicating her royal role. Find portraits of previous members of the royal family in the Bernadotte Gallery. Don’t miss the Treasury in the palace’s basement. It houses regalia, such as crowns, swords and a silver baptismal font.

The palace has two museums. Discover a collection of Italian sculptures in Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities, open only in the summer. King Gustav III brought over 200 sculptures to Sweden in the late 1700s. At the Tre Kronor Museum, learn about the original royal palace that burned down in 1697 on the same spot as today’s palace.

Be sure to watch the Changing of the Guard. The 40-minute ceremony includes a foot parade accompanied by a military band, sometimes with mounted royal guards. Check the Swedish Royal Guard’s official website for schedules.

Come to the palace in August to enjoy live music. Classical concerts take place in the Royal Chapel and Hall of State.

Located on Gamla Stan (Old Town), Stockholm Royal Palace is a 20-minute walk from the city center. Public transportation, such as the bus and metro, stops close to its main entrance. Pay-and-display parking is available nearby but is expensive.

Stockholm Royal Palace is open daily from mid-May to mid-September. During the rest of the year it’s open from Tuesday to Saturday except public holidays. Sign up for free 45-minute guided tours in English. See the palace’s official website for exact opening times and tour schedules. Find ticket prices and event times on the palace’s official website.
