In a tribute to one of the state’s music legends, this statue draws fans from everywhere. Spend some time at the memorial to honor this guitar hero.

The Stevie Ray Vaughan Statue in Austin is often adorned with flowers and gifts in memory and to celebrate what this guitarist gave to the music genre of blues. Standing by a path, with a lake and the downtown area as the backdrop, is the statue of the musician who honed his career in the city. Have your picture taken by the memorial of this music legend.

The bronze statue was erected in 1994, 4 years after his tragic and early death when a helicopter on which he was a passenger crashed shortly after takeoff. He had just finished a concert in Wisconsin and was travelling to Chicago when the accident happened. The outpouring of grief was global, but it hit Texans hardest as this aspiring superstar’s career was cut short.

Vaughan’s statue shows him in his customary poncho, straight brimmed hat and western-cut boots holding one of his electric guitars that were often initialed with the letters SRV. Observe his metal shadow that provides a different image of him playing his guitar.

Austin was an important city for Vaughan because it was here that he launched his career. Although born in Dallas, he found Austin met all of his requirements for being a place where he could explore his musical talent. See his statue along with others in the town that honor soldiers, firemen and a star-holding goddess standing atop of the Capitol building’s dome roof.

The Stevie Ray Vaughan Statue is located at Auditorium Shores on the bike and hiking trail called the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail on the south side of the river. Take some flowers to add to the others that are often there and have his music playing in your earbuds. Parking is a distance from the statue so be prepared to walk along the well-maintained trail.
