A church older than the town it is located in is always worth a visit. This one is also a centerpiece of the University of Heidelberg’s history.

One of the oldest Christian houses of worship in Germany, St. Peter’s Church has borne witness to the many movements and changes that have impacted Heidelberg for the last millennium. Completed in its current Gothic form in the late 15th century, it is sometimes overshadowed by some of the city’s more splendid cathedrals, but its history is written in every brick. Find the church in the small streets to the south of the Altstadt. You’ll know it by its pink sandstone exterior.

Surrounded by buildings, the church has an unassuming façade and is an under-appreciated tourist destination. Stop by after a visit to the neighboring university library or make a special trip to connect to the religious and intellectual history of the city. Duck inside to see its lovely red and gold interior.

In the University chapel, read the plaque commemorating Marsilius von Inghen, the university’s founding director whose grave was once preserved in the church itself. Also in this chapel, admire the new stained-glass windows designed by Johannes Schreiter. Become part of the intellectual life of the university with the podium discussions that take place throughout the summer.

Back in the light sit in the shade of the oak tree just east of the chancel the tree was planted in 1883 for Martin Luther’s 400th birthday. Ponder the tumultuous religious history of the area and all of Germany in the dappled sunlight streaming through the leaves.

St. Peter’s Church is located on the southern edge of the Heidelberg Altstadt, near the more natural areas just outside the city. Walk here in under 10 minutes from the Marktplatz at the center of the Altstadt. A bus goes directly to the church in about 20 minutes from Heidelberg’s main train station. Parking is extremely limited in the area.

In summer, the church is open to visitors during the day from Monday to Friday, with reduced hours on Saturdays. Opening hours are seasonal and are reduced in the winter. Check the church’s website for event listings. Guided tours in English can be arranged by appointment.
