St Lucia Crocodile Centre

Spot various species of African crocodile and learn about the ecosystem of St. Lucia at this educational wildlife center just outside town.

Get a fascinating insight into the world of crocodiles at the Crocodile Centre St. Lucia. Discover their breeding habits and watch feeding demonstrations. Pose for a souvenir photograph while holding one of these descendants of ancient and predatory aquatic reptiles. At the Crocodile Centre St. Lucia you will find exhibits that highlight the region’s ecosystems.

Join a guided tour around the center’s different ponds. They are home to representatives of all of Africa’s crocodile species in addition to the American alligator. The reptiles range from tiny hatchlings to fully grown adults that are several yards long.

See the Nile crocodile, a species that is present throughout the continent and the only one found in South Africa. They can grow up to 20 feet (6 meters) in length. Spot the long-snouted crocodile, which inhabits the wetlands of Central and West Africa. From the tropical rainforests of the same region is Africa’s smallest species, the dwarf crocodile.

Look on as trained guides step into the enclosures to feed the crocodiles. Be amazed as the adults open their jaws wide and clasp on the food with their sharp teeth. Come in November and December to see eggs lying on the side of the ponds and observe as females become hostile to protect them.

Browse exhibits that provide an insight into St. Lucia’s coastline, dune forests and grasslands. Nearby St. Lucia Lake is important as one of South Africa’s biggest breeding grounds for crocodiles. Peruse examples of the many living organisms that thrive in the surrounding lakes, mangrove swamps and tidal pools.

The wildlife center is less than a 10-minute drive north of St. Lucia’s town center. Drive and use the free parking available at the entrance to the center. It’s also possible to walk here, although the road has limited sidewalks.

Crocodile Centre St. Lucia is open daily, except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and it has an admission fee. Guided tours take place twice a day. Arrive on Saturday afternoon or Wednesday evening during the summer months to watch a feeding.
