Explore a coastline of snaking rivers, sandy barrier islands and rich marshland. Discover this region’s African-American heritage and historic towns.

Southeast Georgia is a remarkable region characterized by grand old towns, sprawling marshlands and wide, sandy beaches. The region stretches from the Florida border to the southern banks of the Altamaha River. Experience Southeast Georgia’s preserved architecture and historic landmarks or go island hopping to experience distinctive idyllic coastlines. Historically and ecologically rich, Southeast Georgia’s quaint riverside towns present unique insights into maritime heritage, wildlife encounters and environmental protection.

The region’s largest city is Valdosta, featuring broad boulevards decorated with historic architecture and azalea plants. Nearby, Waycross contains fascinating historic landmarks, including Gothic Revival churches, homesteads and civic buildings. Along the harbor, check out Brunswick to experience Brunswick Old Town Historic District’s superb architecture. Take a walking tour around the district and find parks and gardens dotted with majestic oak trees. Brunswick’s restaurants serve exquisite regional seafood, including shrimp, crab and oyster dishes.

From Brunswick, embark on an adventure to Southeast Georgia’s magnificent barrier islands. Reveal the region’s colonial history on St. Simons Island, which contains 18th-century battlefields, fort ruins and historic homesteads within its boundaries lined with salt marshes. On Jekyll Island, find luxurious country clubs and golf courses, as well as some of the region’s best beaches.

Farther south, Cumberland Island shelters an awe-inspiring variety of wildlife. Spot some of the 300 bird species living here or check out sea turtles and manatees on a wildlife-watching boat tour. Reach the island easily via St. Marys, which is rich in maritime heritage and antebellum architecture. Nearby, the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge provides opportunities for camping, hiking and wildlife watching amid pine and cypress forests.

Experience Southeast Georgia on a road trip around the region’s destinations. The closest major airport is in Jacksonville, Florida. The region’s islands are easy to access via causeways, ferries and boats. Southeast Georgia’s mild climate is ideal for outdoor adventures. Grab your bike or kayak and explore the region’s picturesque river systems and waterfront cycling trails.
