For a sense of traditional Qatari life, visit this marketplace in the heart of Doha. Shop, appreciate the architecture and have a meal here.

The Souq Waqif stands in an area of Doha where nomadic people of Qatar and maritime traders have long come to trade with local residents. Visit the renovated site of the Souq Waqif to observe traditions that have lasted for centuries.

Shopping is the main activity in the souk. Browse among the traditional thawbs, long white shirts worn by men, and abayas, long black body coverings worn by women. More colorful garments decorated with embroidery and other adornments are popular with younger locals and tourists. This is a good spot to purchase a pashmina shawl that will be useful for showing respect when in public places and spiritual destinations.

Locals purchase tools, cookware, pets and home goods here. Incense, spices, dried fruits, perfumes and carpets are popular items purchased by travelers. Meander past the Falcon Souq and wander into narrow alleys.

If you find something you like while comparison shopping, use a GPS-enabled device to put a pin on the location in order to find your way back to a particular shop to make the purchase.

Stop at art galleries and handicraft stores. Look for the giant bronze thumb, Pouce, by French sculptor César Baldaccini at a crossroads within the souk. Walk to the Souq Waqif Art Center on the southern side of the souk to view art and participate in holiday festivals.

Plan to have a meal or two at the varied restaurants of the souk. Choose from Qatari, Yemeni, Iraqi, Syrian, Indian and Mediterranean cuisine. Try specialities such asShujja barbecue and the Middle Eastern dessert of kunafa with cheese. The market also has shisha or hookah spots for relaxing with friends over tobacco or flavored smokes in air-conditioned or open-air lounges.

Before land reclamation extended Doha north into the harbor, the Souq Waqif and nearby Al Koot Fort were on the shoreline. Find the site today a bit inland in the heart of Downtown Doha.

Shops are generally open from morning to evening, with a closure for several hours in the afternoon. Restaurants are open all day, with some operating 24 hours. Stroll through lovely Souq Waqif Park to the north and walk along the harbor to view the Pearl Monument and fishing boats.
