Sotkamo is a municipality of about 10,500 inhabitants in Kainuu region, where the scenery is dominated by hills and lakes. A great and inexpensive trip to Sotkamo is easily arranged by hiking in the impressive surroundings of Hiidenportti National Park. The most famous attraction in the park is Hiidenportti Gorge, the vertical rock walls of which can be seen even on the shortest visit. The national park has nearly 20 miles of trails, surrounded by mires and forest. Be sure to see the traditional Kainuu landscape at Kovasinvaara.
The easiest route to Sotkamo is via Kajaani, where the nearest domestic airport and railway station are located. Many air and train services link with buses that go directly to Vuokatti.
