Popular Sights Around Son
Son has a history as important crossroad in the area. The bridge over the River Dommel has traditionally been the passage between surrounding towns like Oirschot, ‘s-Hertogenbosch and De Peel. Used by merchants during the historical Dutch economic boom, and the military during World War II, the bridge was renovated in 2013 to help it deal with modern traffic.
Make sure you don’t miss the town’s top attractions. The Tower of the St. Petrus’ Bandenchurch is located in the centre. This tower is adorned with beautiful ornaments and has 47 bells. The new church is situated next to the tower and was built after the old one burned down - which some consider as hardly unfortunate, as the old one had become too small.
The old town hall is also impressive. It was built in 1782-1783 and has been used as a post office since the new, more modern one was built. Check out the oldest house in Son at Dommelstraat 12 - it was built in the middle of the 17th Century and there is a small clock tower on the roof.
There is a small cemetery in Son, possibly the smallest cemetery in the Netherlands. It was originally used for people who committed suicide, as they could not be buried in the sacred ground. A former army major and his wife are also buried here, since they were Protestants and not Catholics. It is also the resting place of an unnamed homeless person who drowned in the Dommel.
The city of Eindhoven is famous for its architecture, design and industries and is only a 15-minute ride away from Son. Popular activities in this city include shopping in the city centre, enjoying the buzzing nightlife in Stratumseind, visiting museums like the Philips museum or spending time in the green parks.
Just 20 minutes away, Helmond is a bit smaller than Eindhoven, but just as interesting to visit. Helmond has several museums, monuments and churches. On Saturday’s you can visit the farmers market, which is held in the city centre. Here you can buy fresh vegetables, cheese, bread and flowers, but also other things. Helmond also has a 14th century medieval castle, Kasteel Helmond.
