Solares

Travel Guide

Solares combines archaeological sites, palaces and culture with a spring that breathes life into a magnificent thermal spa.

A holiday in Solares can include whatever you want it to: book a stay in one of our suggested spas to balance body and mind before exploring the town's attractions. Whatever option you choose, you can relax in the waters of the Fuencaliente spring.

One of the essential monuments in Solares is the Palacio de los Marqueses de Valbuena. This classicist palace was built in 1692 and converted at the end of the last century into a hotel. Its facades and gardens are a delight. More modern is the Ramón Pelayo Cultural Centre, which hosts a wide range of exhibitions and shows. The Marqués de Valdecilla local history museum completes the town's cultural attractions.

A bargain getaway to Solares is clearly an excellent way to explore the history of Medio Cudeyo, where archaeological remains of great interest have been found. For example, without leaving the town you can visit the Mina Pepita natural and mythological park, dedicated to mythological Cantabrian beings. These magical creatures lurk in the five acres of the old mining area. Another site of great natural value is the Cabárceno natural park, just over a mile south of the town.

The early medieval site of Pico del Castillo is another stop you will want to include in your trip. This extends through the quarry located on the other side of town, after crossing the A8 Autopista del Cantábrico dual carriageway. The fortifications are among the best preserved in Cantabria, while the objects recovered from the site can be seen in the Cantabria Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology (MUPAC).

Solares is only seven and a half miles from Santander airport, which is very easily reached from anywhere in Spain. Once there, you only have to take a short bus or train ride to get to Solares. We take care of all these details when creating our Solares holiday packages, so what are you waiting for?
