Work on your tan, go for a swim in the clean lake water or rent a kayak at this beach on the southern shoreline of Kungsholmen.

Do as the locals do when the sun shines and make your way to Smedsuddsbadet. This lakeside setting is one of Stockholm’s most popular beach parks for swimming, watersports, picnics and barbecues. Go for a stroll along the Kungsholmen waterfront and enjoy views of Lake Mälaren and some of the city’s many islands.

Throw a towel down on the beach, which is a short strip of fine sand that slopes gently down into the calm lake waters. The water depth is shallow and the swimming area is marked by ropes, making it a favorite place for families with young children. Arrive early during the summer months to get a prime spot on the beach. Otherwise, set up camp on the grassy lawn that stretches back from the sand.

Make use of the beach’s amenities, which include a café, showers and toilets. This is one of the finest picnic locations in a city blessed with numerous outdoor spaces, so remember to bring food and drink with you. Consider grilling your lunch on the communal electric barbecues. Active visitors can explore the lake by renting kayaks and stand-up paddleboards at the water sports center just a short walk away.

From the beach, the Smedsuddsvägen pathway passes beneath Västerbron bridge into Rålambshovs Park to the east. Within this vast park is a children’s playground, sports facilities, a small marina and a restaurant with boules courts. Outdoor theater performances take place at the amphitheater in summer. You can also walk across Västerbron bridge and admire uninterrupted views towards Gamla Stan.

Smedsuddsbadet is a dog-friendly beach between September and May. Located in the Marieberg district of Kungsholmen island, the beach park is less than 15 minutes’ walk from Thorildsplan metro station. A pleasant way to get here is to cross Västerbron bridge by bike or on foot from Södermalm. Another scenic walk is to follow lakefront Norr Mälarstrand from Stockholm City Hall.
