Swim down a natural water slide and explore a former pioneer homestead at this popular destination for outdoor fun.

Slide Rock State Park is a picturesque natural retreat in the middle of scenic Oak Creek Canyon. Within the park sits a 43-acre (17-hectare) apple farm and a historic homestead. Race down the famous Slide Rock water slide or hike through scenic woods.

The park gets its name from its main attraction, the famous Slide Rock. This 80-foot (24.3-meter) stretch of slippery creek bottom acts as a natural water slide. Ride down the slide and plunge into deep clear pools. The flatter area of the creek is perfect for wading in and cooling off on a hot summer’s day.

Explore Pendley Homestead, the former home of Frank Pendley and his family, who acquired the land in 1910. Pendley’s pioneering irrigation system made him a rare farming success in the area and his methods are still used in the park today. Today, the homestead is one of the few remaining in the canyon area. See displays of antique farm equipment on the property.

Slide Rock State Park is also a wonderful place to fish, swim and hike. Fish for rainbow trout in Oak Creek. The park offers two short and simple hiking trails. One travels along the water, while the other winds through the woods along the canyon. Spot native wildlife, such as white-tailed deer and bald eagles.

The park has also been a featured location in numerous Hollywood Westerns from the 1950s. Look for it in well-known films such as Broken Arrow starring James Stewart and Gun Fury starring Rock Hudson and Donna Reed.

Slide Rock State Park is just a 10-minute drive north from Sedona. During summer, Slide Rock is extremely busy and the parking lot often fills up by early afternoon. Arrive early to avoid the crowds. The park is open daily during daylight hours. There is a small entry fee per vehicle. If you visit in autumn, attend the annual apple festival and taste the many varieties of apples grown at the park.
