Sharif Hussein bin Ali Mosque

Its religious and historical meaning is matched by its elegance and beauty, particularly at night, when the structure is Aqaba’s shining beacon.

The Sharif Hussein bin Ali Mosque is a stunning white religious structure named after one of the key figures of the Arab Revolt. It is characterized by its stylish central dome and accompanying minaret. See the mosque at night, when its narrow tower is illuminated in bright white light.

Notice the intricate patterns on the exterior of the dome. An elegant black fence and palm trees and other exotic vegetation enclose the mosque. Admire the modern and slick design of the structure, which was built in 1975. In front of the entrance is a charming geometric garden and a shiny marble plaza.

Learn about the history of the mosque from the elegant plaque outside. It has descriptions engraved in English and Arabic. Pass through the main entrance to explore the elegant interior, made up of many pillars and a fountain displaying mosaics.

Chandeliers hang from the ceiling of the main hall, which is decorated with colorful stained-glass rose windows, works of art and a striped carpet. Enjoy views of the garden, with its wooden gazebo and the mountains in the distance. Speak with the guard at the entrance to learn more about the customs in this religious building.

Note that the mosque requires visitors to dress formally. Women must cover their heads and bodies with robes, which can be borrowed from the mosque. The site is open to the public, but not during prayer times. You may also wish to explore the nearby market for souvenirs and trinkets.

Find the Sharif Hussein bin Ali Mosque at the southern end of the Great Arab Revolt Circle in the heart of Aqaba. Walk north for 10 minutes from the Arab Revolt Flagpole Plaza to reach it. Make sure to visit neighboring landmarks, including the Aqaba Museum, Al-Hafayer Park and the King Hussein bin Talal Mosque.
