Sestriere is located 2000 metres above sea level, between the upper Susa Valley and the upper Chisone Valley, and is one of the most famous and popular ski resorts in Piedmont. Its origins date back to the first half of the 1900s, when tourist facilities were built at high altitude to create a modern ski resort in Sestriere Colle, which connects the Susa Valley with the Chisone Valley, easily accessible from neighbouring towns. In 2006, the Sestriere district hosted the Winter Olympics, becoming the Piedmontese home of downhill skiing, with a large number of runs spread over several slopes at high altitudes to guarantee constant snow cover throughout the season, with the help of a planned snow-making programme. In addition to its quality and breadth, the area offers a wide and varied range of tourist attractions, both in summer and winter, thanks to its shops, spas, gyms, hotels and restaurants of various kinds.
In winter, Sestriere is considered a paradise for skiers, a place where you can ski even for days at a time on a great variety of fully snow-covered slopes. Among its most important ski slopes are the beautiful "Kandahar", which flows down from Mount Banchetta along a particularly challenging route, with many changes in gradient, ideal for downhill skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts, and the "Sises” piste, which takes its name from the mountain, a challenging course characterised by a continuous succession of very technical stages. On Mounts Sises, Banchetta and Fraiteve run the pistes that together form the great Sestriere skiing area, perfectly integrated and connected with the rest of the Via Lattea ski area. For cross-country skiing, several kilometres of groomed trails are available, including some very sunny and panoramic ones on Mount Rotta. Even ski mountaineering lovers will find some great excursion opportunities here, including the climb to Rognosa del Sestriere, a tradition in spring, or the one to Mount Banchetta in early winter or spring, when the lifts and slopes are closed.
In summer, Sestriere is a modern tourist resort offering holidaymakers many opportunities for sports, with indoor swimming pools and tennis courts, a skating rink, a large shopping area with all kinds of shops, restaurants, pubs and clubs. Not far from here, along the road that leads down to the Chisone Valley, is the beautiful Fenestrelle fortress. And there’s more, including an 18-hole golf course, an indoor pool with adjacent outdoor pool, a natural lake equipped for fishing: plenty of reasons to plan your holiday in Sestriere! For lovers of outdoor sports, there are many opportunities for hiking, horseback riding or mountain biking.
