Known for its beach with perfectly soft sand, this peaceful town has stunning architecture and a fantastic range of cafés and restaurants.

Sink your feet into the fine, golden sand of the town beach and paddle in the gentle waves breaking along Senigallia’s shoreline. Explore the grand Renaissance castle before you head down quiet streets to discover some of the region’s tastiest seafood.

Visit the invitingly named Velvet Beach and relax on its warm, golden sand. Stay in the shade of an umbrella or swim in the clean, blue-green sea. Rent paddleboats or paddleboards. However you choose to enhance your tan, finish your trip to the beach with a cold drink and a sandwich at one of the waterfront cafés.

Stroll inland and admire the colossal Rocca Roveresca. Constructed at the end of the 15th century, the castle features four tall, cylindrical towers that made spotting approaching enemy ships easy. Wander along the thick stone turrets and see cannons positioned for battle.

Find the exit among the labyrinth of corridors and walk westward toward the banks of the Fiume Misa. Here, view the Portici Ercolani that is built parallel to the river. Marvel at the 126 arches and cream color of this elegant structure. Come on Thursdays when an open market held here features merchants selling fresh food and handmade gifts.

When you’re hungry, set off toward one of the town’s restaurants. Many can be found along the banks of the river while others feature sea views. Try fresh pasta and pizza or the local specialty, seafood soup.

Visit during the first 2 weeks of August when the summer jamboree takes place. This is a celebration of U.S. music from the 1940s and 1950s with classic rock ‘n’ roll and swing concerts running through the day and late into the evening.

Senigallia is a 3.5-hour drive northeast of RomeOpens in a new window. Find a range of hotels in town, with many providing free bicycles for guests. Long idyllic beaches are just some of the attractions the Ancona region is known for. Enjoy fascinating culture and some of Italy’s finest food too.
