Visit this islet in May for the pious celebrations and hear the intriguing tales of this chapel’s miraculous inception.

Senhor do Bonfim Church is a quaint chapel built on an island just off the coast of Angra dos Reis. It has an elegant design inside and out, offering stunning views of the coastline and nearby islands. Visit the tiny landmass and learn the interesting story behind the construction of the chapel.

Architect Manoel Francisco Gomes built the church in about 1780 on this small islet near Angra dos Reis. It was restored in the 1970s to its former glory. Listen to the legend behind the construction of the chapel. It is said that after a long night on the water, a fisherman found an image of the Crucifixion of Christ on this islet. The story says that he took it to the mainland three times and it miraculously reappeared on the island on each occasion, prompting the priest of Angra dos Reis to build a church on the spot where the image was found.

Admire the whitewashed façade with its strong pediment, large porch and four columns. Gaze up at the bell that stands atop the small tower. Enter the church and see the sacristy. Among the religious gems is the image of the Senhor do Bonfim, a figuration of Christ in the moment of Ascension.

Note that the structure is open to the public only in May. Join the processions and celebrations that take place within the chapel during this month. Purchase snacks and drinks from the food stalls and dance to the live music. Stroll around the tiny patch of sand on the islet’s flank and venture into the crystal clear water.

Senhor do Bonfim Church is on its namesake islet in the Atlantic Ocean, a little southwest of Angra dos Reis. It stands between Bonfim Beach and the larger Maia Island. Visit nearby highlights in the area, such as Praia Grande and the Naval College.
