The Scoletta del Santo is part of the Sant’Antonio di Padova Basilica complex. Dating back to the 15th century, it contains an array of chambers opulently decorated with gold-leaf fixtures and frescoes depicting religious scenes. Follow in the footsteps of the brotherhood who met to discuss ecclesiastical topics in medieval Padova.
Admire the elegant brick construction style of the school’s façade. Enter and pick up a brochure from the information center to learn about the context behind the various works of art and religious halls. Guided tours of the complex lasting about 90 minutes are available. Chat with the friendly docents for intriguing tales about the confraternity, a Christian brotherhood that sprung up a few years after the death of St. Anthony.
Inspect the excellent fresco of Madonna con il Bimbo by Padovanino and the wooden statue of the Immaculate Conception. The building’s highlight is the Priory Room, with its spectacular 16th-century cycle of 15 frescoes by several famous artists. Note that a young Venetian artist called Tiziano Vecellio (Titian) made his name contributing to this room, before going on to have an illustrious career.
Marvel at Titian’s trilogy of miracle-related paintings, made up of the Miracle of the Newborn, the Miracle of the Healed Foot and the Miracle of the Jealous Husband. This last painting portrays an angry man stabbing his wife.
There is a fee to enter the church, which is open daily from morning until evening. It closes for a break at lunchtime.
The Scoletta del Santo stands between the Sant’Antonio di Padova Basilica and the Università degli Studi di Padova Botanical Garden in the southern part of central Padova. Take the bus to a nearby stop or hop on the tram to the Santo station. While you’re in the area, see the Abbey of Santa Giustina and the Loggia e Odeo Cornaro.
