Travemuende is affectionately referred to as “Luebeck’s prettiest daughter,” and when you visit you’ll soon see why. The Trave Promenade presents a wonderful introduction to the town. Wander along the promenade and check out the network of canals and boat moorings. You’ll see some of the town’s oldest buildings flanking the northern banks of the Trave River. Among these are the tall-spired Church of St Lorenz and the 16th-century Alte Vogtei, which now contains a restaurant.
Look across the river to see the Passat. This four-masted sailing ship dates back to 1911 and can be explored on a tour. Make your way out onto the Travemuende Pier and look back across the town’s waterfront from the boardwalk. Take photos of the sweeping views of the beach and the town’s historic Casino building, which is now home to a hotel. Check out the 16th-century Old Lighthouse (Leuchtturm) and explore the maritime museum inside.
If the weather is warm, head to the nearby Travemuende Beach and rent a strandkorb (covered beach chair) to enjoy the sunshine. Go for a refreshing swim in the gentle waters of the Bay of Luebeck or try watersports, such as windsurfing or sailing. If you’ve worked up an appetite, make your way to the Vorderreihe shopping strip and check out the selection of restaurants, cafés and lounges. Cruise ships regularly arrive to Ostpreussen Quay, which is close by the Vorderreihe promenade.
Travemuende is located in the southern corner of the Bay of Luebeck. It can be reached by train or car from Luebeck in approximately 30 minutes.
