Scalzi Bridge

Scalzi Bridge featuring boating and a bridge

One of the four bridges that crosses the Grand Canal, this attraction connects two fantastic Venetian districts and is one of the most romantic sights in the city.

Stretching over a series of stakes and docked watercraft, Scalzi Bridge, literally meaning “barefoot crossing,” is often the first bridge visitors see as they arrive by train in Venice. One of only four points of crossing over the Grand Canal, it is a truly beautiful sight. Look out over the backchannels and regal façades facing the water. Take a picture, because you will want to remember this sight.

Where cars normally perform certain functions, in Venice the same tasks are performed via boat. Look for delivery barges, trash and emergency services, all of which operate by boat. Wait for gondolas, sandoli, vaporetti and yachts to make their way leisurely along the channel. Appreciate how the Venetian Lagoon has made this a unique city as you observe one of its main throughways for boat traffic.

Explore the sestieri (districts) on either side of the bridge, Santa Croce and Cannaregio. In the eastern part of Santa Croce are gorgeous churches, the palazzo Fondaco dei Turchi and the Museum of the History of Fabric and Costume. In Cannaregio, find the Santa Maria di Nazareth and the Ca d’Oro.

Visit Scalzi Bridge twice, once for sunrise and once for sunset. Set an alarm to wake up early for the sunrise. It is worth going to see the most perfect time of day to look out east from the bridge. Crowds will not have formed yet and the atmosphere is very romantic. Actually, any time is perfect for spectacular people-watching at the bridge.

Scalzi Bridge is a short walk from Santa Lucia train station. As you leave the station, descend the steps toward the canal and turn left. You cannot miss the bridge spanning the banks of the canal.

Visit Scalzi Bridge and you will see at once why this city has been a favorite of artists and honeymooners for centuries.
