Sunbathe on the beach, enjoy unrivaled views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and go hiking, swimming, fishing and boating in this vast park.

Sandy Point State Park is a much-loved recreational hotspot for residents of the Baltimore–Washingtonmetropolitan area. Spend a day here picnicking, sunbathing and swimming at the beach and admiring striking views of Chesapeake Bay, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Sandy Point Shoal Lighthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The park first opened in 1952 and has since proved a popular destination for the residents of the surrounding urban regions. If you have any questions regarding the area, ask the knowledgeable staff working at the park office.

Choose between a wide range of activities and areas within the 786-acre (318-hectare) park. Go sunbathing and swimming along the lengthy shoreline at South Beach. Lifeguards are on duty at selected sections of the beach during peak summer months.

Find a bathroom and shower facilities near the beach as well as outlets selling snacks and picnic provisions. Grassy picnic areas, some of which have grills, border the beach areas. Try to spot the Sandy Point Shoal Lighthouse out at sea. It has stood here since 1883 and now runs on solar power.

Purchase a Chesapeake Bay sport fishing license and cast a line from the shore in one of the park’s designated fishing areas. Try to catch a Chesapeake Bay blue crab from the crabbing pier just south of the boat launch ramps. These colorful creatures, identifiable by their electric blue claws, are known for their tasty flavor. Check with park officials to ensure you adhere to all crabbing rules and regulations.

Boating and hiking are also popular at the park. Launch larger vessels from the marina and smaller boats, such as canoes and kayaks, from the small craft launch area. If you’d rather stay on dry land, hike the Symbi Trail, which offers views of pine forests and marshes and presents many birdwatching opportunities.

Find Sandy Point State Park in Anne Arundel County at the western end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The park is open from early morning to sunset, from January to October and from early morning to late afternoon, November to December.
