Look inside this lovely Baroque monastery, which is home to a collection of valuable paintings, sacred objects and gold works.

San Martino Pinario Monastery is one of the most important monasteries in Galicia and one of the largest religious monuments in Santiago. Find intricate carvings decorating its façade, while its relatively plain interior is dominated by an enormous gilded altarpiece.

The monastery was built in the 17th century on the site of an earlier church and spreads over 220,000 square feet (20,000 square meters). The city passed a law to prevent the monastery and its church from having towers taller than its neighbor, the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. Today, the monastery encompasses a hotel and a private seminary, as well as a church and museum, which are open to the public on special occasions.

As you ascend the elegant staircase leading to the church’s entrance, admire its commanding façade. The decorative exterior is adorned with figures and carvings depicting biblical stories. Notice four immense Doric columns framing the door and watch for an image of St. Benedict just above. The statue on the upper portion of the entrance is a depiction of St. Martin of Tours giving his cloak to a poor person.

Inside you’ll immediately see the church’s stunning altar, which is said to have been carved by the monastery’s monks. Search out a hidden door behind the altar, through which monks once entered the church.

Don’t miss the exhibition of portraits depicting people living in small villages throughout Italy and Spain. These poignant pictures offer captivating insight into the decline of these isolated cultures.

Be sure to note the 17th-century choir stalls, which depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, and the ornate retablos (devotional paintings) found in the side chapels. The building also houses an old printing press and an intriguing historic pharmacy.

San Martino Pinario Monastery is located in Praza da Inmaculada in Santiago de Compostela’s Old Town. Opening times vary depending on the season. There is an admission fee.
