Sun, sea and sports abound on Asturia’s favorite sandy beach, located in the heart of Gijón and overlooking the picturesque Bay of Gijón.

With golden sand and a beautiful seaside outlook, San Lorenzo Beach is a favorite for tourists and residents of Gijón alike. Make the short walk down from the town center to discover this beloved urban beach.

Take your time to enjoy the view out over the bay as you stroll down the promenade, which was first built in 1907. Walking from the east, where the beach meets the mouth of the river Piles, you can look up towards the scenic headland where the skyline of the Old Town meets the rocky cliffs that close the beach off to the west.

The beach offers nearly a mile (1.6 kilometers) of sandy expanse in the shape of a shell. Get active by joining in the many games of beach volleyball and soccer that take place at San Lorenzo, or simply lay back on the soft sand and relish the jovial atmosphere. The conditions are usually favorable for swimming.

To get your heart pumping, try one of the water sports on offer at San Lorenzo Beach. Head out to catch some waves on a bodyboard or a surfboard, or capture the breeze on a windsurfer. Sea kayaking is also available from the beach.

The beach is well equipped with modern facilities. Bathrooms, sun beds for rent, and a first aid and medical service are all available on site. Once you are finished at the beach, browse the local shops or recharge at one of the nearby restaurants .

Outside the summer months, once the crowds of bathers have thinned, San Lorenzo trades in its umbrellas for leashes and opens up as a dog beach.

The San Lorenzo Beach is located just west of the Church of San Pedro, very close to the historic downtown of Gijón. Parking is available nearby. Numerous sites such as the Palacio de Revillagigedo and the Plaza Mayor are within easy walking distance of the beach.
