Royal Gorge is a narrow ravine that is approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) long and more than 1,000 feet (305 meters) deep in places. The natural phenomenon is part of the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, a recreation area with numerous rides and attractions.
Walk or drive across the Royal Gorge Bridge. The impressive structure extends for 1,270 feet (387 meters) and stands 956 feet (291 meters) above the river. If you are walking, stop to admire the incredible views. There are also good vantage points from the dining room and outdoor deck of the visitor center. It is situated on the north ridge of the gorge.
There are more ways to experience the rugged scenery. if you are looking for an adrenalin rush, try the Royal Rush skycoaster. You will be strapped into a harness attached to a long cable that's hoisted to the top a tower. This is similar to a bungee jump and riders reach speeds of up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour before hovering above the canyon.
Royal Gorge Bridge and Park is open daily, although hours can vary between months. Visit the attraction’s website for up-to-date information. There is a fee for admission and some of the attractions require additional payment.
The park is about 58 miles (89 kilometers) southwest of Colorado Springs. The journey takes one hour by car and there is free on-site parking. Another way to view the spectacular canyon scenery is aboard the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. The 2-hour journey from Canon City passes through rocky terrain and under the suspension bridge.
