Savor one of the most breathtaking views on Lanzarote at this lookout, which features sculptures, a café and a sophisticated bar, all designed by César Manrique.

For stunning views and lasting memories of the dramatic Lanzarote coast, be sure to stop at Mirador del Rio. This viewpoint sits atop the Risco de Famara in northern Lanzarote, offering a sweeping panorama of the El Rio Strait and La Graciosa Island.

This location was incredibly important to ancient Lanzarote inhabitants, serving as an ideal vantage point to spot ships secretly landing. The area was reimagined by César Manrique, a famed 20th-century artist who built the architectural café and bar atop the escarpment. As you explore, note his distinctive style, which is characterized by a complementary relationship between art and nature.

Spot the location of Mirador del Rio below a wrought iron sculpture, also created by Manrique. Its design depicts both a fish and a bird, representing the dual significance of water and air to the Lanzarote landscape.

The lookout is located 1,550 feet (475 meters) above sea level atop a sheer cliff. Separated across two tiers, it offers different perspectives of the area. In this panorama, inspect the rugged geography of La Graciosa Island or enjoy the red hues emanating from the Salinas del Rio Salt Mines. Look down for a stomach-dropping view along the escarpment's vertical cliff.

Admire the design of the Mirador del Rio café, which features use of rough stone on the building's walls. This blends harmoniously with the volcanic rock surroundings and provides an interesting architectural experience. Sit inside and savor a coffee, combined with a superb view of the ocean through a panoramic window. A bar also serves delicious cocktails.

Before leaving, pass through the souvenir shop and pick up a gift to take home.

Mirador del Rio is located on Lanzarote's northern coast, a 30-minute drive from Arrecife. Get there via tour bus or rent a car and use the parking lot below the escarpment. The lookout is open daily and there is an admission fee. Put aside around 1 hour for your visit.
