Rows of trees and floral displays in this enormous plaza are framed by immense Baroque and Neoclassical gems in the core of the German district.

As one of Strasbourg’s principal open spaces, Republic Square is graced by some of the city’s most majestic and historic structures. Embellishing the center of this vast plaza is a park with a scenic set of gardens and walking paths. Relax for a while in this large and leafy set of grounds and forget the hubbub of the city center.

Among the highlights overlooking the plaza is the Théâtre National de Strasbourg. Admire the neo-Renaissance façade of this 19th-century theater. Watch a production in the stately auditorium and check for occasional English-language plays that are put on with French subtitles.

Next door stands the immense 19th-century National University Library, with its green dome and striking pediment. Venture inside and leaf through books in the reading area. Marvel at the Baroque revival designs of the Hôtel des Impôts building and the 20th-century Préfecture structure.

Note that much of the area around the plaza was built while the city was under the rule of the German Reich. You may notice the Germanic neo-Renaissance style of the Palais du Rhin, on the square’s western side. Admire the pretty gardens surrounding three sides of the building.

Having viewed the impressive buildings, stroll past the entrance to the 19th-century Théâtre Bridge and inspect the Aby Warburg spiral bench sit on it if you’d like. Wander through the leafy park in the center of the plaza and read a book beneath a tree. Study the War Memorial, which portrays a mother holding her dying sons, one who died for France and another who died for Germany.

Find Republic Square in the heart of the German quarter in the northeastern part of Strasbourg’s city center. Ride the tram to the République stop, which can be accessed via several lines. While in the district, check out surrounding highlights such as the Parc du Contades, the Musée Adolf Michaelis and the Opéra National du Rhin.
