Reginald F. Lewis Museum is a captivating African-American museum in the heart of Baltimore. The affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution collects, preserves and shares the rich history and important contributions of Maryland’s African American population. Discover how more than 200 years of slavery influenced the lives of African-Americans in Baltimore and the state of Maryland.

Many collections of artifacts, photographs, artworks and rare books are displayed at the museum. See the African-American military experience, represented through an extensive collection of United States Army objects, such as uniforms, documents, insignia and videotapes. Other large collections include artifacts relating to Maryland’s African-American families, communities and early jazz scenes.

African-American Marylanders endured more than two centuries of slavery. Through educational and historical displays, the effect of slavery on families and communities has been explored. The museum also features thought-provoking special exhibits, which focus on many aspects of African-American life in Maryland. The museum is named after Reginald F. Lewis, a prominent African American Marylander. Lewis was a distinguished lawyer, businessman and philanthropist, responsible for establishing the Reginald F.
