Pitch your tent at this idyllic camping spot and spend your vacation exploring dense fir forests, sandy beaches and sparkling waters perfect for swimming.

There are many reasons why Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park is a favorite destination for outdoorsy people of all ages. Look and listen for signs of local wildlife as you comb the wide stretches of beautiful beach and walk the forest trails. Come for the day or take advantage of the excellent facilities spread across the park’s campsites.

Although Rathtrevor Beach is now a well-loved vacation destination, it retains the rugged spirit of its early years. Its name comes from Willian Rath, who in 1886 chose this area as the site of his log cabin. Facilities have improved, particularly since the area was named a provincial park in 1967. Make the most of this ideal place to get back to nature.

Come to the park in different seasons for totally different experiences. The character of the place is shaped by the flora and fauna that live here. In spring, pick your way through beaches packed with seabirds drawn in by the herring breeding season. Between February and May, look for huge numbers of Brant geese migrating through the park

Swim in the sea during summer, when the temperature of the water is just right. After, relax on the beach as the sun dries you off. When the tides are right, take to the waves for some windsurfing.

Fishing is another popular activity here. Again, your catch will be dependent on the time of year. Expect more bountiful catches during breeding seasons.

One of the reasons that the park is so popular is that its trails are easy to walk and bike for people of many ages and abilities. Wind your way through tall fir and cedar forests and pause at viewing points to take in the amazing ocean vistas. Stop at the Rathtrevor Beach Nature House, which hosts activities designed for young nature enthusiasts.

Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park is best reached by car. Parksville is just under 2 miles (4 kilometers) to the west. Camping fees vary seasonally. In the summer, reserve in advance, as the park attracts many families looking for an unforgettable way to spend their vacation.
