Putney Beach is a crescent-shaped beach that arches toward a sandy point on north Great Keppel Island. Backed by low dunes and tropical trees to the south and rock pools to the north, the beach is spacious and partly shaded. Putney Beach’s gentle waves and warm waters make it the perfect spot to bring the family for a day of seaside fun. Play in the shallows or rent a paddleboard and cruise around the coast. Recline under the shade of leafy trees and cap off the day with a visit to the waterfront bar and bistro for a meal with a sunset view.
Stroll along the soft sands and find a pleasant spot to lay down your towel. Enjoy the vista of beautiful blue waters speckled with national park islands. Stretch out on the sand and soak up some of Great Keppel Island’ signature sunshine. Looking south, you’ll see some of the ferries and boats arriving at the island’s marina.
Have a refreshing swim in the clear waters and splash in the shallows. Float in the tropically warm waters and see if you can spot some of the fish that inhabit the deeper channels.
Rent a canoe or a paddleboard from the operator on the beachfront and explore the coastline. Look back on the superb beach and its low dunes and scenic fringe of trees. If you’re hungry after your adventure, have a picnic under the shade. Alternatively, make your way south to the bar and bistro situated on the point and grab a cold drink or a meal.
Putney Beach is situated on the north coast of Great Keppel Island and neighbors Fishermans Beach. It is easy to reach on foot and by unsealed roads from the marina. Visit the beach on a daytrip or spend the night at one of the lodges or cabins set amid the coastal woodlands. The beach is best visited at mid to high tide.
