Situated between the island of Singapore and Malaysia, Pulau Ubin has only a couple of hundred inhabitants and is one of the very few non-urban environments in the state. This tiny island got its name from the granite tiles that were its main export in the 1960s. In more recent times the main trade has changed to welcoming visitors, and the idyllic local environment has been preserved, with the granite quarry consciously returned to a natural state. One of the last traditional rural villages (kampongs) in Singapore can be found here. A walk through the fascinating mangrove forest and a look at the indigenous wildlife at Chek Jawa is an ecological treat. On arrival on Pulau Ubin, the recommended option is to rent a bike. While there are a small number of taxis and much of the island can be seen on foot, a bicycle will allow you the freedom to get around and to appreciate all that the island offers. The kampong is a good place to start (or finish) your trip with some simple but delicious local food, or to have a drink with the people of the island. The fabulous biodiversity of Chek Jawa is one of the main attractions. These wetlands have naturally grown from the coral reef which was here 5,000 years ago. Marvel at the weird and wonderful sea hares, cuttlefish and octopus while enjoying the tranquillity of the sheltered beaches. Follow the raised walkways through the fantastic inter-tidal mangrove forests to see the range of life in the exposed roots of this tree which can live in both fresh and salt water, as well as the colourful birds and local pigs. To get a wider view of your surroundings, mount one of the observation towers for lovely vistas across the island, and to see the city in the distance.Take a short 'bumboat' trip from Changi Beach to get to Pulau Ubin. Go to the ferry terminal and the boat will depart when around 10 people are on board – this generally doesn't take very long. The boats only operate during daylight hours, and there is some accommodation available on the island. Alternatively, you can avail of the very popular option of camping for the night.
