Ascend up to the cloud-level summit of the Isabel de Torres mountain for spectacular bird’s-eye views of Puerto Plata and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

Puerto Plata Cable Car carries passengers up the side of the Isabel de Torres mountain to a height of around 800 meters (2,625 feet). Admire the views from the cable car and from the summit, where a botanical garden, a statue of the open-armed Christ the Redeemer and a restaurant await.

The development of the flat-topped Isabel de Torres summit began in the early 1970s with the erection of the Christ the Redeemer statue. Following the statue, which is similar to the famous Rio de Janeiro statue of the same name, came the addition of a botanical garden and the installation of the cable car. Join other visitors exploring the attractions at the top of the mountain.

Step aboard the cable car and admire the views over the city and the coastline during the ascent, which takes around 7 minutes. Bring a camera to capture photos of the majestic city and bay vistas visible from the summit and to take advantage of the photo opportunity that the colossal Christ the Redeemer statue creates.

Besides admiring the far-reaching views, you can also stroll through the summit-level botanical gardens, where almost 600 different plants are cultivated. As you wander around, look for feathered species including hummingbirds, doves, nightingales and even palmchats, the national bird of the Dominican Republic. Other animals known to inhabit the gardens include green lizards, geckos and tree frogs.

Several souvenir sellers can also be found at the summit. Should you get hungry, sit down and eat in the restaurant before descending back down to ground level.

The Puerto Plata Cable Car is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Rise early and ride the cable car in the morning as clouds often conceal the views later in the day. Adults and children aged 5 and over must pay a fee to ride. Children aged 4 and under ride free. The cable car is included on most tours of Puerto Plata, although it is also possible to visit independently by either driving or taking a taxi.
